Why A Relay?

Few things beat the fun and camaraderie of racing a relay with friends, team-mates and colleagues!

Dash through this high-energy course in the centre of Nelson before passing the baton off to your teammate.

THe races.

  • Calling all school-aged athletes! This is your chance to compete with your friends and represent your school with pride.

    Distances:

    Kids’ Relay (U11 y/o): 4 × ½ lap (~375m)

    Junior Relay (10-17y/o): 4 x 1 lap (~750m) relay

  • Gather a team of four friends/family/teammates/or complete strangers, and take on the challenge of the fast and furious 4 x 1 lap (750m) relay

  • Assemble a team of four colleagues and take on the challenge of becoming Nelson’s fastest business in the 4 x 1 lap (750m) Business Challenge Relay!

    Which business will reign supreme and earn the coveted title of the fastest business in town this year? Are the reigning champions - the Nelson Police, able to make it back to back victories??

Prizes

All finishers: All finishers will receive a wooden finishers medal.

Top 3: Top three teams overall will be presented with a prize.

Spot Prizes: We love a good spot prize almost as much as we love a good race pack, so we’ve partnered with some generous businesses to bring you some great spot prizes. Spot prizes will be randomly distributed in race packs, so if you find something extra in there - congratulations, you’ve won!

Photos

We have a talented team of photographers out on the course taking epic shots for the gram, or if you’re a little more old school - for the wall. A link to race photos can be found on the Results page after the race.

The course.

All relays start and finish in front of the Cathedral steps so you get as much spectator support as possible! The start is FAST! Runners hoon down Selwyn Place and hang a right onto Church St, and then another right onto the bustling Hardy St. The energy of the spectators enjoying an evening drink at one of the restaurants will carry you up Hardy St.

4 x 1/2 lap relay runners will hand the baton off to their next runner who they’ll find waiting for them in front of Rodd & Gunn. Runners then continue up Hardy St until they hit Hope St, where they hang a right and then another right to go dashing down Selwyn Place towards the start/finish line.

Runners will hand off their baton to their next runner in front of the cathedral steps.

DISTANCES:

Kid’s Relay - Under 11: 4 x 1/2 lap (375m)

Junior Relay - 11-18 y/o: 4 x 1 lap (750m) relay

Open Relay: 4 x 1 lap

Corporate/Business Relay: 4 x 1 lap

PLEASE NOTE:

All kids’ relay participants must meet at the Nelson Club (pre-race assembly area) 20 minutes before their event is due to start. All other relay events must meet no later than 15 minutes before the event.

The Rules.

Kids’ Relay Participants Rules:

  • All kids’ relay participants must meet at the Nelson Club carpark 20 minutes before the event.

  • Runners 2 and 4 will receive an event bib to wear while walking with event staff to their changeover point. They will remove these bibs when they are ready to race.

  • Supervision after each leg
    As incoming runners finish their leg at the changeover point, they will be given an event bib to identify them as being in staff care.
    A parent may collect their child directly, but must complete a clear, face-to-face handover with event staff. Any runners who are not collected will remain with event staff and be escorted to the finish line once all runners have completed that changeover. The same process applies to Runner 2: once all Runner 2 participants have finished their leg, event staff will escort those still in their care to the finish line.

  • Finish line and medals


    Once all runners are reunited with their team and a parent, and the handover from event staff is complete, they can collect their medals.

All Participants

  • All Junior, Open, and Business Relay participants must meet at the Nelson Club carpark 15 minutes before the event.

  • Runner one will be given a baton with a timing chip. Each runner must complete their full lap carrying the baton, and then pass it to the next runner. Runner 4 will exchange the baton for their medal once they’ve finished the race.

  • Bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards and dogs will not be permitted on the course.

  • Baby strollers and wheelchairs are permitted on the course.

  • Competitors must not be accompanied by anyone who is not officially entered in the event. The exception to this is if they are a guide/support person in the AWD race or a minor, in which case they may have someone accompany them on the course.

  • Music devices are not permitted during the race for safety reasons.

  • Competitors must stay on the marked course and keep to the left of the course if being passed by another competitor. 

  • Competitors should be kind and respectful to other competitors.
